If you thought meme coins were going to dogs, you might be right.
Four out of the five most popular meme coins based on market capitalization have some sort of dog image.
Dogecoin, which features the Shiba Inu dog as its logo and namesake, has a market capitalization of $22.19 billion at press time, according to CoinMarketCap, making it the most popular.
Crypto is the first of the so-called “meme coins” that are inspired by meme or have some humorous characteristics.
It was created by software engineers Billy Marcus and Jackson Palmer, who decided to create a payment system as a “joke”, mocking unbridled speculation in cryptocurrency.
The second most popular cryptocurrency is Shiba Inu, which has a market capitalization of $16.23 billion.
The coin is named after the Japanese dog breed and was created in 2020 by an unknown person or group known as “Ryoshi”.
Dogelon Mars, another dog-themed cryptocurrency, is the third most popular meme with a market capitalization of $696.66 million. Coin inspired by Tesla (TSLA) – Get a Tesla Inc . report CEO Elon Musk, whose name is a combination of Musk and Dogecoin.
Next on the list is Samoyedcoin, which comes with a market capitalization of $85.87 million. The coin, inspired by the Dogecoin, is named after the samoyed, a dog breed that originated in Eastern Europe.
Rounding out the top five is MonaCoin, which has a market capitalization of $73.65 million.
MonaCoin is mostly used in Japan and was launched in 2013. It was named after “Mona”, a cat-like character and was designed by an anonymous “Mr. Watanabe”.
